Advertisements example 1:
Handlebars by Flobots
This is an advertisement by the political rap band Flobots. I have chosen to analyse this poster because like MGMT, Flobots are very popular among NME readers. The font of the advertisement has one style and two colours. The style is very bold and easy to read and the two colours are quite simple. The poster almost looks like an American propaganda image from the 70s, this would be on purpose to represent the bands political image. The i
mage in the bottom right hand corner of a warning sign of a man riding a bike without holding onto the handlebars, this comes from the lyrics in the song "i can ride my bike with no handlebars" your eye is instantly drawn to it because of the bright colours on a bland background, an effective advertisement method which grabs passes by attention and directs them to the rest of the poster. The writing itself is very demanding, "DJ SHADOW REMIX ALSO AVAILABLE NOW" "DOWNLOAD NOW" the NOW is quite aggressive and commanding. Under the warning sign there is information about the bands websites, it does not need to be that big because it is in the area around the warning sign so the viewers eyes are instantly drawn to it.

Example 2
Tonight Tonight by the Smashing Pumpkins
This is an advertisement from the band the Smashing Pumpkins. There music is quite similar to MGMT's by them trying too be different from mainstream music but still being very popular. This advertisement is for there single tonight tonight. This song is very mellow and even though the song is about Chicago (the city where the main singer was born) it has a feeling of space travel to it. The video is shot to look like it was filmed in the 1930's/40's which gives it a form of artistic vibe. The video is about a couple who go into a spaceship, they jump out and have a very bizarre adventure. The advertisement seen to the left here is based around the video, the band is wearing the same old fashioned costumes and the artistic style is the same of that in the video. I am going to make my poster in this kind of design, not the artistic style or anything like that, but i do want it to be based around the video we are making.

Example 3

Only by the night by Kings of Leon

The main photograph of this advertisement is from the album art. By doing this the viewer will instantly think of "kings of leon" when they see this poster or the album cover. Below the base on the photograph there is information on the album and what singles it contains. The white writing of kings of leon and the green writing of only by the night works as a contrast to the background. The writing gets smaller as it gets less important to the viewer, the name of the band and album title are very large and noticeable while the copy write information, which is not very important to the viewer, is really small and discreet.

To get an idea of the sequence of our shots, we created an animatic. An animatic is a graphic organizers series of illustrations or images displayed in sequence for the purpose of pre-visualizing our music video. This will help us during editing, it will also help to see if our ideas fit together well.

MGMT Digipak
Front
As a part of my project, i designed and created a digipak to go with my music video.
I took photographs and edited them on photoshop to fit the theme and atmosphere of
the music video. The photographs were taken at the location the video is going to be
shot at and the computer is an important object in our video. I edited the original photograph
of the front cover of the digipak to make more lights, increase the saturation of colour, increase
the contrast and change the amount and colour of the plants on the ground. The photograph has been changed to have a less concrete feel to it and a more abstract, colourful feeling has taken its place. I increased the amount of lights in the background by using the Stamp tool on photoshop. The photograph has been slightly stretched and cropped to form the square shape needed to fit the front cover. I am generally quite pleased with the front cover however if i did it again i would not get completely rid of the concrete part of the image. I really like what i have done with the lights in the background but i would of liked to have taken a landscape photograph so it did not have to be stretched and cropped so much.

Inside 1
The inside of the photograph is a toxic waste sign with a stem so it takes the form of a
flower. I did this because it is quite related to the bands strange, new age image. I made the image blue and black so the colours match the rest of the digipak and so the flower is a silhouette, to much detail would ruin it.

Inside 2

The inside photograph is a fairly simple close up photograph of the computer in a field.
The idea of the computer came from the lyrics from the song:
Every mess invested was a score
We couldn't use computers anymore
It's difficult to win unless you're bored
The digipak needs to be related to the song, in colours, atmosphere and what the song is about, since the song does not really have a storyline the objects mentioned in the song would relate the song and the digipak together instead. The photograph was photoshopped to have a blue filter effect so it colour matches with the front and the back of the digipak.

Back
The back was inspired by The Arctic Monkeys digipak of "Favorite worst nightmare" Simple but effective. The colour of the lights were edited to match the rest of the digipak. the back also carries on the image from the front.
